The USS Diamond is one of the most famous starships of the small-medium size range. Launched some 30 years ago, the Diamond has seen action along the Neutral Zone borders with both Klingon and Romulan starships. More recently, the Diamond has been assisting in the patroling of the former Neutral Zone with the Klingons, 'showing the flag' for the Federation and performing goodwill missions. The captain of the Diamond is Commander Richard Foster, a fairly senior destroyer commanding officer with promotion to rank captain said to be months away. Foster is reluctant to be promoted, he does not wish to lose the small ship feel of a Polaris class for the impersonal feel of a larger Excelsior class starship.

The Diamond is currently operating from Starbase 24 and is involved with the Klingon missions. Foster is a veteran of the Klingon Neutral Zone and has been overseeing the Montrose as it prepares to withdraw from their Qo'nos assignment. The Diamond is due to assist the Victory in the next stage of the cultural exchanges, Starfleet and the Klingon Empire both feeling the smaller ships would be better suited for the role.
