Tiburonians: species summary
Classification: Humanoid
Homeworld: Tiburon
System: Tiburon/Omega Fornacis system
Region: Beta Quadrant
Political affiliation: United Federation of Planets by the 2250s
Known individuals: Sevrin, Zora and T'Lor.
The visual evidence therefore suggests that hairlessness should not be treated as a species-wide characteristic.
The individual is bald, with enlarged and highly convoluted ears, but there is an additional feature: a neat sequence of small raised structures running across the top of the skull towards the forehead.
So this is particularly useful for imagining modern Tiburonians. The ridging isn't necessarily replacing the enormous ears of the 23rd-century design. The photograph shows both features occurring together.
A useful consolidated anatomy
If we synthesise only what canon and these images actually support, a Tiburonian population could plausibly be visually diverse:
Ears: unusually enlarged, strongly folded and sometimes almost fin-like. This is the most consistent diagnostic characteristic.
Cranial structure: some possess a line of small cranial/forehead ridges, while others apparently do not.
Hair: substantial individual variation is possible; the images range from completely bald to extremely abundant scalp hair.
Eyebrows: similarly variable, ranging from very prominent to visually absent.
Tiburon and civilisation
Tiburon itself is an inhabited, warp-capable humanoid homeworld in the Beta Quadrant.
The civilisation has a surprisingly deep canonical history.
Tiburonian society included tribal structures. At some point in the planet's history, Zora conducted horrific body-chemistry experiments upon members of several Tiburonian tribes. Later generations condemned this work, and by the 23rd century Zora was remembered as one of the species' most notorious historical figures.
By 2149, Tiburon was sufficiently integrated into interstellar scientific society to host an Interspecies Medical Exchange conference.
By the 2250s, Tiburonians were members of the United Federation of Planets.
Their canon appearances also suggest considerable scientific achievement. Sevrin is described by Memory Alpha as a brilliant research engineer, while by the late 24th century the Tiburonian T'Lor was serving in Starfleet. 1
The Tiburon system, also known as Omega Fornacis, is presented as a binary system in the Beta Quadrant, roughly 466 light-years from Sol. Memory Alpha identifies its stellar components as Omega Fornacis A, a B-type dwarf, and Omega Fornacis B, an A-type dwarf. Tiburon is the inhabited component and Tiburonian homeworld.
Tiburonians are a Federation humanoid civilisation from the Beta Quadrant whose most distinctive anatomical characteristic is an elaborate, enlarged ear structure, accompanied by considerable variation in hair, brows and minor cranial ridging; their society retains a remembered tribal past but had become an interstellar scientific culture and Federation member by the 23rd century.
